Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission – The WCC is the agency in charge of processing your claim for workers’ compensation benefits. Go here to file a claim online. You can also read through general FAQs about claims, hearings and appeals, or find more questions and answers about workers’ comp benefits and how to file a claim.

US Department of Labor – The DOL website includes a section devoted to the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act (LHWCA), which covers maritime and dockworkers injured on the job.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration – OSHA is a federal government agency committed to worker health and safety on the job. Their website contains a section for workers that explains your rights to a safe and healthful work environment, and provides you with the tools to file a complaint free from retaliation.

Maryland Department of Transportation SHA – The State Highway Administration provides a host of safety programs geared toward bicycle safety, pedestrian safety, safe driving through construction work zones and more.

Toward Zero Deaths Maryland – This safety campaign of the SHA provides information on distracted driving, impaired driving, aggressive driving, seat belts and pedestrian safety.

Maryland State Bar Association – The MSBA provides informative brochures for the public, including What to do in Case of an Auto Accident.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – The NHTSA sets standards for vehicle safety and works to prevent highway deaths. Distraction.gov is their official U.S. website focused on distracted driving. From here you can get a link to state laws, including Maryland, on what is legal regarding texting or cell phone use behind the wheel.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration – The FMCSA issues truck safety regulations covering maximum hours of service for truck drivers, and requirements for trucking companies to inspect and maintain their fleet. Knowing whether a trucker and trucking company were in compliance with federal regulations is an important part of investigating a truck accident.

Motorcycle Safety Foundation – The MSF provides on-line and in-person training courses to practice safe riding. The American Motorcycle Association provides tips for riders as well as a look at Maryland motorcycle laws.

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety – This foundation conducts research and safety campaigns surrounding issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving, teen drivers and senior drivers.

Internal Revenue Service – Go here to learn about the Estate Tax and other estate planning mechanisms with tax consequences, such as Like-Kind Exchanges Under IRC Code Section 1031.

Family Law Resources

Maryland State Bar Association – MSBA family law brochures for the public include Divorce and Separation and Divorce and Custody Mediation.

Child Support Calculator – This online calculator is provided by the Department of Human Resources (DHR) and is based on the Maryland Child Support Guidelines in the case of primary custody or shared physical custody. Working through this somewhat complicated worksheet should give you an estimate of the amount of support that may be ordered in your case. Keep in mind that the court is authorized to deviate from the guideline amount if convinced an adjustment is needed.

Child Support Enforcement Administration – From this section of the DHR website, you can apply online for child support services, estimate the amount of support owed, check your account or pay support. For help with enforcement at the federal level, there are the Office of Child Support Enforcement and the Federal Parent Locator Service, which can be helpful when a parent leaves the state owing support or violating custody orders.

National Family Resilience Center – This organization, headquartered in Maryland, provides counseling and educational programs to help children and adults cope with divorce and other family transitions.
